Vinography: Hungarian Wine Judging

As some of you know, I've just spent the last few days holed up on top of a hill overlooking the plains of Hungary tasting several hundred Hungarian wines and passing judgement upon them. An 11th Century abbey that also happens to be a world heritage site makes for a pretty impressive spot to be passing judgement, it turns out.

János Áder, the new Hungarian president, has entered office today

"Today, there is again a need for compromise. For compromise not in the superficial political sense of the word, but in a deeper sense. Vinography: Off to Hungary to Judge, Taste, and Learn

It was 2005. I was in New York City on business, and convinced (not that I had to twist his arm) my business partner to come to a restaurant called Cru with me for the first time. I had been reading about Cru for years, and positively salivated at glimpses their wine list online. To make a long story short, Robert Bohr suggested a bottle of Furmint. It was my first taste of the grape outside of Tokaji dessert wine, of which I had tasted only a few at that point as well.

Holocaust Memorial Month of the Embassy of Hungary

In 2000, during the first government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the National Assembly of Hungary declared April 16 as the Hungarian Holocaust Memorial Day to be commemorated in the Parliament of Hungary and all Hungarian secondary schools every year. This particular date was chosen because April 16, 1944 was the first day of the Hungarian Jewry being forced into ghettos. Ever since 2001, this Memorial Day serves as official Holocaust commemoration in Hungary and wherever Hungarians may live worldwide. The Embassy of Hungary organizes a Holocaust Memorial Month in Washington, DC in April 2012 to commemorate those who perished during the Holocaust, to pay tribute to the men and women who rescued Hungarian Jews from being transported to Nazi concentration camps to their certain deaths, and to remind ourselves that we have the responsibility and duty to do everything we can that such a terrible tragedy will never happen again.
