Following the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States, President of the Republic János Áder, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó congratulated the President-elect on his victory and extended an invitation for even closer cooperation with the United States.
President János Áder congratulated the President-elect on his victory, and underlined that the election of Mr. Trump reflected the wish of the American people for change and renewal in a difficult period of time when Americans and Hungarians face multiple challenges at home and globally. President Áder confirmed that the historic partnership between Hungary and the United States, based on shared values, the love of freedom and the commitment to democracy will help us cope with those challenges together. President Áder also emphasized that having just celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight against Soviet dictatorship and oppression, Hungarians are ready to continue the cooperation with the United States in the North Atlantic Alliance to safeguard peace and to strengthen international security. Reacting to the news that Donald Trump has been elected President of the United States, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to close cooperation and remarked online “What great news. Democracy is still alive.”
Echoing the Prime Minister, in a statement, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó wrote that after a remarkable campaign, democracy has emerged stronger. “Over the past year we have witnessed a remarkable election campaign, which has now come to an end with a clear decision from the American people,” Szijjártó said. Minister Szijjártó underlined that Hungary looks forward to working together with the United States on the challenges of mass migration and the escalation of global armed conflicts.
