The Hungarian-American mathematician Endre Szemerédi received the 2012 Abel Prize from His Majesty King Harald at the award ceremony in Oslo, Norway, 22 May. The Minister of Education and Research, Kristin Halvorsen, the President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters Nils Chr. Stenseth and Chair of the Abel Committee Ragni Piene gave speeches at the ceremony. Earlier that day Szemeredi  was received in audience at the Royal Palace. In the evening the Minister of Education and Research, Kristin Halvorsen hosted a banquet at Akershus Castle in honour of the Abel Laureate. The Abel Prize that carries a cash award of NOK 6,000,000 (close to € 800,000, US$ 1 million), is awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
