The 2017 Annual Conference of the Honorary Consuls

Between November 29 and December 1, 2017, the Embassy of Hungary hosted the annual Honorary Consuls’ Conference of Hungarian honorary consuls and economic counselors serving in the United States.

In his opening remarks Ambassador László Szabó thanked the honorary consuls for their committed work and requested the assistance of the participants in further strengthening the ties between Hungary and the United States.

The special guest of the conference, Ambassador Eszter Sándorfi, Head of the Department for North America described in detail the most important factors affecting the US-Hungarian relationship.

During the course of the three-day conference, Ambassador Zita Bencsik, Consul General in Chicago, Ambassador Ferenc Kumin, Consul General in New York, and Mr. Attila Danku, Economic Counselor in Los Angeles described in detail the work of their representations.

Diplomats of the Embassy of Hungary led panel discussions on various topics, including diplomacy, consular matters, cultural diplomacy, press relations, energy policy and congressional relations. Six representatives of the Department of Homeland Security provided detailed information on the practical details of the Visa Waiver program.

The honorary consuls in attendance outlined their activities, and the most important events of 2017 in their respective consular districts.

On November 30, 2017 the Embassy of Hungary organized an invitation-only Tokaj wine tasting dinner for attendees of the conference. The new building of the Embassy of Hungary provided an exclusive venue to the event, with EUDEL Ambassador David O’ Sullivan, Representatives Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) Hungarian caucus co-chair, and Chris Smith (R-IA) in attendance.
