The „martian” is Dr. Whitman’s late father, John von Neumann, who was born in Hungary and emigrated to the United States. John von Neumann was the greatest mathematician of the 20th century. He was a key figure in the Manhattan Project; inventor of game theory; a pioneer developer of the modern-stored program electronic computer and an advisor to the top echelons of the American military establishment.

In her Memoir, Dr. Whitman, who was the first woman to serve on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, explores how her struggle to emerge from the shadow of a larger than life parent shaped her life and work.

Present were: Acting Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank and her husband, Hanns Kuttner, a visiting fellow for the Hudson Institute, Adam Posen from Peterson Institute for International Economics and Stuart Mackintosh from the Group of Thirty.
