Hungary Strongly Rebukes US State Department Comments on Hungarian Domestic Court Ruling

The Government of Hungary strongly rebuked a press statement released by the US Department of State in Washington, DC concerning the recent sentencing by a Hungarian court of Syrian native Ahmed Hamed who was involved in the attacks on Hungarian police at the Hungarian-Serbian border in September 2015. In an official statement, the Cabinet Office of the Prime Minister responded, calling the State Department’s comments "inappropriate and hypocritical.”

Hungarian Corporate Tax Rate to be Lowered to 9% in 2017

At the Regional Digital Conference in Budapest on Thursday, November 17, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that corporation tax will be lowered to single digits next year: a rate of 9% will apply equally to small and medium-sized enterprises and large corporations. He added that this was decided at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, after a proposal from the Minister for National Economy, and earlier consultations with employers. Mr. Orbán said that, with regard to increasing the minimum wage in Hungary, he had asked the Minister for National Economy to do as much as possible in seeking to raise it to as high a level as businesses can reasonably sustain.

Visegrád Group, Baltic States Push to Streamline LNG Export Procedures

On Thursday, November 15, Ambassador of Hungary Dr. Réka Szemerkényi and six other Ambassadors of the Visegrád Group (Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic) and the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania jointly signed a letter addressed to senior Democratic and Republican leaders in the US House of Representatives and Senate urging bipartisan support to streamline export procedures on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
