Hungary’s “Sing” Takes Home Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film

Hungarian short film "Sing" (“Mindenki” in Hungarian), directed by Kristóf Deák, took home the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film at the 89th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, 26 February. The 25-minute film is the first Hungarian-produced film to win an Oscar in the category of Best Live Action Short and marks consecutive years that a Hungarian film has taken home an Academy Award, following in the footsteps of László Nemes’ "Son of Saul".

Embassy of Hungary Hosts Trio of Post-Inaugural Events Under the Headline “Salute to Freedom”

On Saturday, January 21st, one day following the Inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States, the Embassy of Hungary hosted a tripartite of events at the soon-to-be new Embassy building at 1500 Rhode Island Avenue under the headline “Salute to Freedom,” including a post-Inaugural Brunch and a VIP piano concert by Steinway Artist, Ádám György. Later in the evening, the Embassy of Hungary turned down the lights and opened up the Embassy’s new “speakeasy” bar for a happy hour and cocktail reception. Distinguished attendees of the Embassy of Hungary’s “Salute to Freedom” included President Trump’s advisors, Senators, Congressmen and Congresswomen, business executives and corporate leaders, leaders of the Hungarian-American community, and Ambassadors and Military Attachés.

Hungarian Corporate Tax Rate to be Lowered to 9% in 2017

At the Regional Digital Conference in Budapest on Thursday, November 17, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that corporation tax will be lowered to single digits next year: a rate of 9% will apply equally to small and medium-sized enterprises and large corporations. He added that this was decided at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, after a proposal from the Minister for National Economy, and earlier consultations with employers. Mr. Orbán said that, with regard to increasing the minimum wage in Hungary, he had asked the Minister for National Economy to do as much as possible in seeking to raise it to as high a level as businesses can reasonably sustain.
